The Story
Beautiful manzanita with a narrow range in the interior coast ranges of northern California, possibly to southern Oregon. These dense shrubs, up to 5 ft., have intense, cinnamon-orange bark. Rounded, blue leaves are often pink-tinted in winter, and covered in a dense fur, soft to the touch and giving them a reflector-like quality. Mid-winter flowers are also pink and followed by orangey fruit. Mineral soil, even clay, and good air circulation and summer drought. Frost hardy to 0F, USDA zone 7, possibly colder.
