Styrax redivivus [Sugarloaf Mnt, Shasta Co.]

Mostly thought of as a summer-rainfall genus, this species native to the west coast of the United States is to adapted Mediterranean climes, most often found growing in western chaparral. To an eventual 8 to 10 feet with an upright habit. Deep green oval leaves, surprisingly long white bell-shaped flowers and golden fall color. Grown in habitats similar to western redbud, this beauty is accustomed to long dry summers and can go summer deciduous when very dry. In habitat re-sprouts from the base after periodic wildfires. Happy in both sun and shade, and appreciates well-draining soil with just occasional deep watering. Hardy to USDA zone 6.
