The Story
Hollyleaf buckthorn is native to western North American from Oregon to Baja California. This, a multi-stemmed shrub, up to 12 ft tall with leathery, evergreen leaves edged in spiny teeth, green with pale veins, and tiny late winter-early spring flowers that produce colorful yellow berries (drupes) that ripen to bright red in fall -- delicious food for the birds. A component of dry slopes and chaparral forest, these require well-drained soil in sun to part shade with no summer water once established. Frost hardy to 0F, USDA zone 7.
