The Story
Somewhere between the species and the variety, this dwarfer tan oak reaches an eventual 20 feet at maturity (slowly). From a site on gabbro soil but adjacent serpentine, these lovely small trees have leaves 3 to 4" in length but with the indumentum and blue tint of the smaller N. var. echiniodes. Excellent small garden or street tree. Full to part sun, no summer water once established. USDA zone 7.
Formerly categorized as Lithocarpus, this species is now under genus Notholithocarpus.
