The Story
A must have plant for its fuzzy, bright orange flowers -- more like a lion's mane than an ear -- spaced along the shrubby stems in late summer until cold sets in. A fine shrub, widespread in rocky areas in South Africa where plants can reach 8-10 ft tall x 5 ft wide, though 4 ft x 3 ft is a more usual size in the garden. Woody stems have long rough leaves and those fabulous flowers. Prefers sun, well-drained soil and, in summer, occasional water. Easily frost hardy in USDA zone 9 and lower with perfect conditions.
