South America’s attempt at the Madrone, and lovely in its own right. Stately, small tree, to 20ft or so and often multi-trunked, with smooth bark, glossy evergreen leaves with very blue undersides, and clusters of white flowers in late winter to early spring. Full sun to part shade. These, a selection from Vilches Chile, need summer water. Frost hardy in USDA zone 8.
