The Story
A naturally occurring hybrid between strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo) and the much less common in our part of the world A. andranche. A handsome small tree to 15 to 20 feet with with an upright vase-shaped habit. Stringy gray bark showing orange-y new stems for which the genus is famed. Glossy green eaves to a couple of inches, pale pink flowers autumn and winter followed by pea sized orange fruit. Most useful for small spaces and more summer drought adapted than A unedo. Well drained soils. Sun to half shade. Tolerant of poor soils. USDA zone 7b.
