Native to dry slopes in California and southwestern Oregon; this descended from the Rogue Valley, Jackson Co. OR. Large deciduous shrub to small tree, typically multi-stemmed, to about 20ft tall with an upright, round-topped vase shape. Compound leaves have 5 leaflets, dark green and finely toothed. Early summer cylindrical panicles of sweet-scented, creamy white flowers, tinged pink are much visited by humming birds and butterflies. Attractive white bark developes with age. The fig-shaped fruits that follow open to a stunning, shiny chestnut...of the non-edible sort. Accepts summer moisture and tolerates heat and summer drought, can go summer dormant with extreme drought. Frost hardy to 0F, USDA zone 7.
