The Story
Shared with us by Portland plantsman David Palmer, this southern Chilean hummingbird's fantasy has 1-2" deep cerise sepals and black-red falls. Long grown in Britain and the western US, its high elevation provenance allows it to remain evergreen, or nearly so, through our coldest winters, growing into a 12' most attractive miniature tree. Ours is now about 10' with the prettiest of golden flaking bark. Happy in full sun in cooler summer climates, dappled shade elsewhere. Even moisture and fertility keep it flowering for long periods. Hardy to USDA zone 7.
