Falling somewhere between ponderosa and grey pine, this stately creature native from Baja to central western Oregon, grows in summer dry mixed forest and is often the dominant tree on serpentine soils. Though larger in habitat, to 30 feet in the garden expected. Bundles of long blue-green foliage, and smooth oval cones. Warm colored bark forms attractive plates with age, smelling of vanilla on warm summer days. Most attractive in the low water garden with good drainage and little care. Sun to lightly dappled shade. Cold hardy to USDA zone 6.
